A quiet gallery wall for loud paintings. One working accent — ultramarine, taken from the water in the work. The rest of the palette (coral, persimmon, gold, leaf) appears only in badges, hovers and small details. Canvases are 48 × 60 in; the UI is built around that proportion.

Color

Neutrals are warm — paper, not screen white. Ultramarine is the only interactive color. The painting palette is reserved for status and accents.

Klevenski paints large: every canvas is 48 by 60 inches, big enough that the viewer stands inside the water rather than in front of it.

body · --fs-md

Born in Florida, based in Tampa. Works in oil on canvas. The recurring cast — goldfish with human hands, pomegranate branches, impossible blue water — comes from a childhood aquarium and a grandmother's orchard. Read the full statement.

Fish with hands, fruit that stares back.

Large-format oil paintings — 4 by 5 feet — where the aquarium and the orchard have stopped pretending to be separate places.

Scale

Four by five feet is hard to feel on a phone. This block draws the canvas and a 5′9″ person at true relative size, hung at gallery height (center at 57 in).

Statement & pull quote

I paint the aquarium the way I remember it, not the way it was — which means the fish have my grandmother's hands. Duke Klevenski, studio notes

The paintings begin as small gouache studies and end as 48 × 60 inch oils, usually one at a time, over eight to twelve weeks. The recurring motifs — goldfish, pomegranate and persimmon branches, human hands and hair — are not symbols with fixed meanings. They are a cast, and each painting is a new scene.

The blue is the constant. It is mixed from ultramarine and a little phthalo, applied in thick horizontal strokes so the surface reads as water even when it is standing in for sky.

Duke Klevenski

Contemporary painter working in Tampa, Florida.

Klevenski works exclusively in a 48 × 60 inch format, a decision made in 2022 after a decade of smaller work. The size forces a physical relationship: the painter reaches, the viewer steps back. His series Orchard Water and Night Aquarium have been shown across Florida and are held in private collections in the US and Europe.

The studio is in Ybor City. Visits are by appointment.

Press & quotes

Klevenski's fish are funny until they aren't. Stand in front of one for a minute and the hands start to feel like yours.

Tampa Bay TimesReview, March 2025

The most confident use of ultramarine I've seen in a Florida painter in a decade.
